Review written by Peter Vincent, Vinntec Limited

I worked with Aaron some years ago while he was developing one of the algorithms described in this book - "MEsh Network Topology Optimization and Routing" MENTOR (see also Bob Cahn's Wide Area Network Design : Concepts and Tools for Optimization).

The book, available in both hard and soft cover, provides an in-depth examination into some of the main mathematical algorithms and heuristics used as computer aids in designing and analysing communications networks. My article in the Local Links Business Library on WAN Topology Design makes use of some of these - at a much simplified level. The book shows how information about the requirements for a network can be defined and stored by such tools, and how the data can be manipulated using the appropriate algorithms to produce feasible network designs. It also explains how such candidate designs can be analysed using mathematics based on queuing theory.

The mathematical content is high, as this text is primarily for those intending to write design tools themselves, or those needing to understand what such tools are doing. Each algorithm is further described in pseudo-code - which can be examined in more detail using a software tool provided with the solutions manual (see below).

As the techniques described are applicable to most, if not all, communications technologies (voice and data; wide area primarily - but also local area), the book's content will remain applicable for many years to come.

The Solutions Manual is a companion to the main book and contains a PC DOS implementation of most of the algorithms and heuristics - and is essential for full understanding in my opinion.
