NEWS
Sixteenth Sunday of the Year
20th July 2008

..."He who sows good seed is the Son of Man,
the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one,
and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
Just as weeds are collected and burned (up) with fire, so will it be at the end of the age..."
[Matthew 13,24-43.]

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Sixteenth Sunday of the Year
20th July 2008
- Today’s parable imagery implies a long view of time. Who or what helps you to remain patient and hopeful as you wait for the growth of God’s Kingdom?
- We all have ‘weeds and wheat’ in our lives. How do you cope with them? How do you allow them to co-exist? Do you?
- Are you like the small mustard seed allowing the Kingdom to grow in you? Are you like the yeast affecting the world with Kingdom values?

Stations of the Cross

Workshop
A workshop was held on Saturday 12th July which gave us the opportunity to meet with the artist Paul Forsey who has been commissioned to produce our stations of the cross.
Over 30 parishioners attended which was a very healthy turn out. Paul took time to explain how he worked and also what had been the influences in his work. In traditional religious art he has been much influenced by the illuminated manuscripts monastic tradition and also The Book of Hours. In contemporary art he has been impressed with the work of Matisse and Picasso.
It was a surprise to some present that Paul spends 80-100 hours on a single piece of work and he took us through how he does this from the colour of paint to the materials used. We also had the opportunity to see the results of a number of his previous commissions. If you are ever in Newbury you can see his Newbury mosaic-commissioned by the Mayor of Newbury-outside the library.
Paul was open to questions and suggestions from those present and points discussed were his use of colour, how long the commission would take and how the history of the parish could be incorporated into his work and how those present could continue to work with him.
The outcome was that Paul will continue to work with this group and a second workshop will take place probably in late September/early October. In the meantime Paul will continue to reflect on this project and how he will go about it whilst those present will be reflecting on any further suggestions they may bring forward to the next meeting. Some present also agreed to do some research that would be helpful to Paul.
The stations are expected to be completed in time for use during Lent 2010.

Abortion Act
Amendments have been tabled which are to be voted upon on Monday 14th July:
- Remove the requirement for two doctors to authorise an abortion;
- Abolish the need for any reason to be given for abortions before 24 weeks of pregnancy;
- Enlist nurses and midwives as abortion practitioners;
- Permit abortion drugs to be given out at any NHS primary care facility (which may include local clinics, a GPs’ surgery or a school sick-room under an NHS school nurse);
- Persecute pro-life agencies using allegedly “deceptive” advertising – while permitting abortion agencies to advertise “pregnancy help” while offering only abortion.
If you disagree with any of the above please contact your local MP. You can phone the House of Commons on 020 7219 3000.

Intentions at Mass
As mentioned ages ago we have more Mass
intention requests than we can deal with.
Although the Mass – being Christ’s offering of Thanksgiving - is for everyone, living and dead, we are only allowed to accept an offering for one intention per Mass (otherwise it can be abused and be used just to make money!); we can mention other intentions (aloud or quietly) but not accept money for them.
For this reason, and also to help him and his parish in Sri Lanka, we have suggested that ‘Mass Offerings’ be sent to Father Marius. This can be done through the Parish Office.
As many requests for prayer are ‘urgent’ (recent death, serious illness, thanksgiving etc) we are, on a weekday only, placing a book on the table of gifts, in which you are invited to write an intention which, on most days, will be mentioned at Mass. This is not intended for every prayer we wish to make but only for ‘urgent’ or ‘important’ intentions.
We will review the practice in a few months.

joining the Diocesan Pilgrimage in Lourdes

Presbytery Conversion
During the work:
• car park completely out of use
• disabled access through the Hall
The above restrictions will cause us all inconvenience, apologies for that. The car park must be closed for safety reasons. When coming to Mass or Adoration please park elsewhere: courteously and legally!
The Builders are aware that Holy Ghost is a ‘working church’ and will do their utmost to avoid impinging on the prayerful aspect of the church (but noise is inevitable!)

Catholic Church Signposts
Sadly we have been refused road-sign-posts to St Bede in Popley. We were
hoping for one either end of Popley Way (ideal situation) and one opposite the main gate. Sadly all have been refused by Basingstoke and Deane ‘Neighbourhood Development’. Sorry! We will try again but…………

Journey in Faith

The Catholic Faith: learn more about it!
- Are you not committed to any Christian denomination and would like to know about Catholicism? Are you a practising Christian but interested in knowing what we Catholics believe and profess? Are you a ‘resting’ Catholic who would like to know more about what the Church today is all about?
- Are you practising but would like to know more?
Thank you to Liz Flitcroft, Mary Huntley,
Deacon Pat Madden and all who came to support
those who join to deepen their faith and, in the case of many, become Catholics.
If you are interested in leaning more about the Catholic Faith or becoming a Catholic, the next planned sessions of ‘Journey in Faith’ are in
St Bede’s Church Hall at 7.30 pm on
Wednesdays: 23rd & 30th July.
Future dates to be announced.
